   Ways to weigh

   1. 1. Baby scale

      The best accuracy for small animals. Baby scales (the kind designed for infants) measure to 5–10 grams and have a flat tray big enough for cats, kittens, puppies, toy dogs, and rabbits. Typically £30–60 from pharmacies or online; you can also borrow from a friend with young children. Let your pet explore the tray with a treat on it first so they're relaxed when you weigh them.

   2. 2. Hold-and-subtract on bathroom scales (or luggage scale for small pets)

      If you can safely lift your pet, stand on the bathroom scale holding them, then stand on it alone, and subtract. Works best for medium-to-large dogs you can lift comfortably — combined error is around ±0.28 kg, which is fine when that's less than 1% of body weight. Don't use this method if lifting strains you or stresses them. A handheld luggage scale with a hook (£10–20) is a good alternative for small dogs and cats in a soft carrier: zero the scale with the empty carrier first, then hook the carrier with your pet inside.

   3. 3. Your vet's scale

      Most UK vet practices will weigh your pet even without an appointment — just ask at reception. Best for giant breeds over 40 kg (where home scales lose precision), reactive pets who feel safer somewhere familiar, or as a periodic calibration check against your home readings. Tag these entries as "vet clinic" in the app so the trend accounts for the scale change. One caveat: different vet scales can disagree by 2–5 kg, so stick with the same practice for the most comparable readings over time.

   Enter your pet's weight.

   Ideally weekly, first thing in the morning — same time, same scale each time, after toileting and before the first meal. Consistency matters more than frequency; skip a week if life gets in the way and the app smooths across readings. For toy and small pets on bathroom scales, take two or three readings in a row and use the average — scale noise is a larger share of their body weight, so a single reading is less reliable.

   See the real trend.

   Daily noise is smoothed out so you see the direction of travel. Puppies and kittens are guided by published growth research.

4. 4

   Know when to check with your vet.

   If something looks unusual — a sudden drop in a senior, unexpected growth in a puppy or kitten — the app flags it and generates a clean summary you can bring to your appointment.
